On April 1-2, 2023, we will be conducting the first annual (we hope) Georgia State Parks on the Air event. The event is quite simple: merging the list of official state parks as published by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources with the list of Georgia parks at http://pota.app yields 50 parks within the state. The objective is to enlist enough individual hams, clubs, and ARES groups to fan out across the state and activate all 50.
Although this is a “contest” in some ways, it’s actually more of a contrived excuse to get out and play radio, which doesn’t take much of an incentive, which is why the “rules” (such as they are) and the “awards” (such as they are) are pretty minimal. And, since this is our first try at doing this event, we’re keeping everything pretty simple. After this event, we’ll regroup and make any changes that seem appropriate. We welcome your feedback for any such changes.
Note that there’s no limit on how many hams can operate at any given park. Just pick one that’s convenient for you, or that you’d like to visit, and sign up. Obviously, if there are multiple signups for any given park, be sure to coordinate your operations to avoid bumping into each other, or pick different days and times, or switch gears and relocate to another unoccupied park. Just work it out so everyone’s happy.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at info@gaparks.org.
In the meantime, keep an eye on this site. We’ll post changes and updates here as they occur. Also, you can follow our Facebook group or Gaggle by using the links listed on the Event Info page, to read and make comments.
